CHARLES WELLS (b. New York, New York, 1935)
Started career as a stonecutter in Italy. Fellow of the American Academy in Rome. Member of the National
Academy in New York. Grants include National Institute of Arts and Letters, The Sierra Club and The Santa Fe
Council on the Arts. Recipent of three Gold Medals for Sculpture from the National Academy Annual.
Has been in group exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, Whitney Museum, Spoleto Festival (Italy),
Macedonian Museum of Modern Art of Thessaloniki (Greece), Amsterdam Concertgebouw and the Corcoran
Gallery of Art. Public collections include The National Portrait Gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art and the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
