Received a Ph.D. from Northwestern University, an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BA from Antioch College. Harmel has been a visiting artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a professor of art in the City Colleges of Chicago. Among the many achievements include a Distinguished Professor Award from Harry S. Truman College, a grant from the Illinois Arts Council and a Purchase Prize from the State of Illinois. Harmel's work has been exhibited at the Block Museum of Art, Madison Art Center, Evanston Art Center and the Hyde Park Art Center. Harmel's work is in many institutions including the Illinois State Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Block Museum of Art and numerous corporate collections.
